Family AI safety
Clear boundaries for safer AI use at home
A useful family AI plan is understandable, proportionate and easy to act on. It protects personal information, keeps school rules visible and gives children a clear route to an adult.
Agree the purpose first
Decide whether AI is being used to explain, quiz, compare or give a hint. A narrow purpose makes it easier to notice when the tool starts doing the work instead of supporting it.
Protect personal information
Keep names, school details, addresses, passwords, health information, private messages and identifiable photographs out of prompts. Follow the school’s approved-tool and data rules.
Expect plausible mistakes
Generated text can sound confident while being incomplete, biased or wrong. Check important facts, quotations and calculations against teacher material or a named reliable source.
Keep parents in the loop
Children should know what a parent can review, why safety checks exist and how to ask for help. Visibility should be proportionate and explained rather than hidden surveillance.
Make the stop route obvious
A child should stop and tell a trusted adult if content is sexual, violent, hateful, encourages harm, requests secrecy or simply feels wrong. Automated detection is an aid, not an emergency service.
Review the rules together
Revisit the agreement when the child changes school year, a new tool is introduced or the school changes its policy. Remove a rule that cannot be explained clearly and replace it with one the family can use.
