AI homework help for KS3 and KS4: a parent guide
Secondary pupils can use AI to explore an explanation, test recall and compare approaches, but the same tool can also produce plausible errors or complete work the pupil needs to do. A clear family routine protects independent thinking and respects school assessment rules.
Before you start
- The school's assessment and AI policy takes priority, especially for coursework, controlled assessment and examination preparation.
- Never upload an assessment paper, another person's work, confidential school material or personal information unless the school has explicitly approved the tool and use.
- An AI tool is not a reliable source by itself. Check important claims against textbooks, teacher materials and named primary sources.
Step 1 — Name the permitted purpose
- Choose one purpose: explain a concept, quiz recall, compare two methods, or give feedback against a teacher-provided checklist.
- Do not ask the tool to write the final answer, coursework paragraph or personal reflection.
- If the task is assessed, confirm the school's rules before using AI at all.
Step 2 — Show the pupil's thinking first
- Have the pupil write an initial explanation, calculation plan or revision answer independently.
- Ask AI to identify one gap or ask one probing question rather than replacing the attempt.
- Keep the original draft so the pupil and parent can see what changed and why.
Step 3 — Verify before accepting
- Check facts, quotations and equations against school materials or a reliable named source.
- Ask the pupil to explain why the revised answer is stronger; if they cannot, return to the underlying concept.
- Remove any invented citation instead of trying to make it look plausible.
Step 4 — Keep an honest record
- Follow any school requirement to acknowledge AI assistance.
- Save useful prompts as study questions, not as completed submissions.
- End the session with a short independent retrieval question to confirm learning transferred.
