AI homework help for KS1 and KS2: a parent guide
Children in Years 1 to 6 need different support as reading, number sense and independent study develop. This guide gives parents a cautious way to use guided AI prompts without turning homework into answer generation or treating an AI response as a teacher assessment.
Before you start
- Follow your child's school homework and AI policy first; schools may restrict or prohibit particular tools.
- Do not enter a child's full name, school, address, health information, login details or identifiable schoolwork into an AI tool.
- Reception is outside this guide. For ages 4 to 5, favour parent-led play, real objects, conversation and teacher-provided activities.
Step 1 — Match support to the key stage
- For KS1 (Years 1 and 2, usually ages 5 to 7), keep an adult present and use short spoken questions, concrete objects and reading together.
- For KS2 (Years 3 to 6, usually ages 7 to 11), let the child explain what they already know before asking for one hint at a time.
- Use the school's wording and method where possible so an explanation does not conflict with classroom teaching.
Step 2 — Ask for a hint, not a finished answer
- Start with the learning goal: for example, “Help me understand equivalent fractions.”
- Ask the tool to pose one question at a time and wait for the child's attempt.
- If the child is stuck, request a simpler example rather than the answer to the submitted homework question.
Step 3 — Check understanding away from the screen
- Ask the child to explain the idea back in their own words.
- Try one similar example on paper, with counters or using a book.
- Treat confident-sounding AI output as something to check; it can be inaccurate or use an unsuitable method.
Step 4 — Stop when the learning goal is met
- Keep the session short and return to the child's own writing or calculation.
- If repeated hints do not help, record the sticking point and ask the teacher rather than extending the AI session.
- Do not use the interaction as a score, diagnosis or judgement of the child's ability.
