How to set up parental controls on a TalkTalk router

TalkTalk HomeSafe is a broadband content filter that requires TalkTalk DNS. Canopy-managed NextDNS is a different DNS route, so the same request does not receive both filters. Identify your exact router, secure its settings, then choose and test the DNS service you intend to use.

Before you start
  • TalkTalk HomeSafe is managed via your TalkTalk account online — not through the router admin panel. Keep your TalkTalk account credentials secure.
  • The TalkTalk router admin panel is only accessible from within your home network.

Step 1 — Log into the TalkTalk router admin panel

  1. Connect to your TalkTalk Wi-Fi.
  2. Open a browser and go to http://192.168.1.1.
  3. Enter the admin username and your saved admin password, or the unchanged credentials on your router’s own label. Do not use the Wi-Fi password.
  4. Click Login.
TalkTalk lists 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.254 as common addresses. Check the label and current instructions for your exact model rather than guessing. An eero uses different app-based instructions.

Step 2 — Change the admin password

  1. Identify the exact model and use TalkTalk’s current password-change instructions.
  2. For a Sagemcom Wi-Fi Hub, TalkTalk documents Maintenance or Administration → Password Management. For a Huawei Wi-Fi Hub Black, it documents Settings → System Settings → Modify Login Password. Older Huawei and D-Link models use different routes.
  3. Set a new password that is at least 12 characters long.
  4. Save changes.

Step 3 — Verify Wi-Fi encryption

  1. Open the Wi-Fi security settings documented for your exact model; menus differ across TalkTalk Wi-Fi Hub, Hub Black and older routers.
  2. Keep the strongest supported mode. Use WPA2-PSK (AES) on a WPA2-only model rather than downgrading a model that supports a stronger compatible mode.
  3. Update your Wi-Fi passphrase if using the factory default.
  4. Apply.

Step 4 — Connect Canopy-managed NextDNS

  1. Start a Canopy Families full-access subscription or 14-day trial; the managed NextDNS profile is included.
  2. If Home Safety displays a validated pair of family-specific IPv4 DNS addresses, check whether the current instructions for your exact router and firmware identify a custom DNS-server setting.
  3. Enter only the assigned addresses into a confirmed DNS-server field. If the pair or supported menu is absent, review separate OS controls in Device Setup and ask for a verified Canopy DNS method rather than guessing. Device Setup does not install Canopy DNS.
  4. After saving, reconnect one device and use Check profile traffic in Home Safety. A positive result verifies recent profile traffic, not every device.

Step 5 — Enable TalkTalk HomeSafe

  1. Go to my.talktalk.co.uk and sign in.
  2. Open My Security Settings using TalkTalk's current My Account instructions.
  3. Review Kids Safe, Homework Time and Virus Alerts. Turn on the features you intend to use.
  4. Choose the Kids Safe categories and Homework Time schedule appropriate for your family; these are separate controls, not filter levels called Protect or SafeSearch.
  5. Click Save. Changes apply within a few minutes.
HomeSafe requires TalkTalk DNS. If a device or router sends its requests to NextDNS, those requests do not receive the HomeSafe DNS filter. Keep device controls alongside your chosen service and test the relevant connection.
