How to set up parental controls on Netgear Orbi

Netgear Orbi is a family of mesh systems, not one router model. DNS and parental-control capabilities vary: some older models use Circle, while supported newer products use NETGEAR Smart Parental Controls. Check the product number and current firmware before following a menu path.

Before you start
  • Netgear Orbi requires a separate Orbi account and app for some management features. Keep this account secure.
  • Do not assume an Orbi supports encrypted DNS because another model does. This guide uses the documented plain-DNS route and calls out model-specific parental controls.

Step 1 — Log into the Orbi admin panel

  1. Connect to your Orbi network.
  2. Open a browser and go to http://orbilogin.com or http://routerlogin.net.
  3. Enter username "admin" and the password on your router label.
  4. Click Log In.

Step 2 — Update firmware

  1. Go to Advanced → Administration → Firmware Update.
  2. Click Check Online.
  3. Install any available update and wait for the router to restart.
Keeping firmware current is important for security. Recheck the NETGEAR support page for your exact product number after an update.

Step 3 — Change the admin password

  1. Go to Advanced → Administration → Set Password.
  2. Enter the current password, then set a new strong password.
  3. Click Apply.

Step 4 — Enable WPA3 Wi-Fi encryption

  1. Go to Wireless Settings.
  2. Set Security to WPA3-Personal or WPA2/WPA3 Mixed.
  3. Update the Wi-Fi passphrase.
  4. Apply and reconnect devices.

Step 5 — Connect Canopy-managed NextDNS

  1. Start a Canopy Families full-access subscription or 14-day trial; the managed NextDNS profile is included.
  2. Copy the assigned Primary and Secondary IPv4 addresses from Home Safety → Router Setup.
  3. In the Orbi web interface, open Advanced → Setup → Internet Setup.
  4. Under Domain Name Server Address, select Use These DNS Servers and enter the two assigned addresses.
  5. Apply, reconnect a device, then run Test connection in Canopy Home Safety.
This is router-level plain DNS. Pair it with device controls because a device using its own encrypted resolver or mobile data can bypass the home-router path.

Step 6 — Enable the parental controls for your Orbi model

  1. Check NETGEAR’s current compatibility page using the Orbi product number.
  2. Use the Orbi app to configure NETGEAR Smart Parental Controls on supported newer models.
  3. If NETGEAR lists the model under Circle support, follow the separate Circle instructions instead.
  4. Review subscription pricing before relying on premium schedules, history, or time limits.
Smart Parental Controls and Circle are different services with different model lists and subscriptions.
